Some nerve blocks are referred to as minor nerve blocks when they are only introduced to anesthetize to a single nerve others are referred to as a major nerve block when they are introduced into a plexus or groups of nerves and still more are referred to as a field block which is a subcutaneous injection of local anesthesia into the area around the intended area to be anesthetized. A nerve block entails the injection of an anesthetic into the area around nerves and groups of nerves.A local anesthetic such as lidocaine or tetracaine is injected into the affected area for minor surgical procedures such as suturing a clean, open wound. These same topical agents are used to decrease localized pain such as the pain associated with a burn.
